CATHODIC PROTECTION INSTALLATION BECOMES A STRATEGIC MILESTONE IN THE REVITALIZATION OF THE SEI PAKNING SMALL CRAFT PORT

Sei Pakning, Riau – BIRU continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering high-quality maritime infrastructure through the installation of a Cathodic Protection (CP) system as part of the Sei Pakning Small Craft Port Revitalization Project. This work represents one of the project’s key construction milestones, aimed at enhancing the reliability of the steel structure while extending the service life of the port facilities.

As a marine structure operating in a highly corrosive environment, the port is continuously exposed to seawater, high salinity, humidity, and tidal fluctuations, all of which accelerate the corrosion of steel components. Therefore, in addition to ensuring construction quality, implementing an effective corrosion protection system is essential to maintaining the structural integrity, safety, and long-term performance of the facility.

Cathodic Protection is a corrosion control technology that mitigates the electrochemical reactions responsible for steel corrosion. The system is widely adopted in marine infrastructure, including ports, jetties, subsea pipelines, storage tanks, and offshore platforms, due to its proven ability to preserve structural integrity and extend asset service life under harsh environmental conditions.

During project execution, BIRU’s construction team carried out the Cathodic Protection installation in accordance with approved work procedures and technical specifications. The installation process began with identifying the designated installation points based on the engineering design, followed by the placement of sacrificial anodes to protect the steel structure from corrosion. Upon completion of the installation, comprehensive inspections and testing were conducted to verify that the system performs as designed and complies with the required quality standards.

All installation activities were executed through close coordination among the construction team, site supervisors, and relevant stakeholders. Quality control measures were implemented throughout every stage of the work to ensure that each component was installed in accordance with the design requirements and delivers optimum corrosion protection for the port structure.

Beyond improving the durability of the steel structure, the Cathodic Protection system provides significant long-term benefits. It minimizes the risk of corrosion-related deterioration, extends the service life of critical assets, reduces maintenance and replacement requirements, and lowers the overall life-cycle cost of the infrastructure. As a result, the system represents a strategic investment in ensuring the long-term sustainability and operational reliability of the port.

One of the key advantages of the Cathodic Protection system installed at the Sei Pakning Small Craft Port Revitalization Project is its 15-year design life. Supported by proper engineering design, appropriate anode selection, and installation in accordance with technical specifications, the system is designed to provide continuous corrosion protection for the port’s steel structures throughout its intended service period. This long-term protection not only safeguards the structure against the aggressive marine environment but also enhances operational reliability while optimizing maintenance efficiency over the asset’s life cycle.

The project is also being carried out with a strong commitment to Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards, which form an integral part of BIRU’s corporate culture. Every member of the project team adheres to established safety procedures, utilizes the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and complies with all applicable operational standards. At the same time, continuous quality assurance and quality control measures are implemented to ensure that every aspect of the work meets the required engineering specifications and construction standards.

Through the successful implementation of the Cathodic Protection system, BIRU reaffirms its commitment to delivering resilient, reliable, and sustainable maritime infrastructure. By integrating proven engineering solutions with rigorous quality and safety standards, the company continues to support the development of strategic national infrastructure that delivers long-term value and operational excellence.
